Idols: City All Set To Ring In Ganesh Chaturthi With Eco-fr…

Ludhiana: With Ganesh Chaturthi set to begin next week, city residents are making preparations to celebrate the festival with fervour. For the past few years, the trend of celebrating Ganesh Mahotsav, which is generally celebrated in Maharashtra, has caught on here. This time, a small replica of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya will be created in Janakpuri (from where the festival trend started in the state). Lord Ganesha will also be worshipped with Lord Ram.
The mahotsav will start from September 19 and continue till September 27 and the immersion ceremony will be held on September 28. Members of various organisations, who organise the festival in large pandals, are getting ready for the celebrations. Preparations are on for the festivities, which will be organised at a grand level. This time, city residents are looking for eco-friendly options for Lord Ganesha so that immersion can be done at home instead of nearby water bodies.
Event organisers are busy sending invites for the celebration. Honey Bedi from Baba Ganpati Sangh said, “Earlier, we used to make 108 idols to be distributed among other organisations or residents to make this festival popular. Now, it has become more of a Punjabi festival. This time, artists from Katak, Orissa will create history by creating a replica of the under construction Lord Ram temple in Ayodhya and Lord Ganesha idol will be also be very beautiful.” He said people should come and take blessings from Lord Ganesha.
Kumar Gaurav from Shri Ganesh Sewa Parivar said, “For over one month, we have been carrying out the palki yatra in various localities of the area. Now, from September 19, we will be organising celebrations.” He said that decorations, idol of Lord Ganesh and other arrangements will be made at a grand level. He also said that in Haibowal area, celebrations will be held at three to four places while many people brought the idol of Lord Ganapati at home.
A resident of Civil Lines, Shelly Jain said, “Last year, I brought Lord Ganesha to my house for the first time for a day but this year, I have decided to celebrate for all the days and then perform proper immersion.” She added that she was looking for an eco-friendly idol so that immersion did not pose a problem.
It took almost three decades to make Ganpati Mahotsav a popular festival not only in the city but also in the state. In one area, the festival takes place at three to four places.
