It’s term 4 for school kids, which means it’s officially hat season – for the young and the not-so-young alike.

SPF plays a vital in counteracting sun damage, but it can’t be our sole line of defence: a wide-brimmed hat (look for one with a brim of at least 7cm) plays a crucial part too.

Luckily, the daggy headgear of our childhood has given way to a plethora of fashionable options, so there really is something to go with every outfit. Keep scrolling for some snazzy options to invest in and wear now, and throughout summer.

OperaSPORT hat, $170

Mina hat, $99

This rich emerald colour plays a key part in Mina’s summer release collection, and this cotton drill hat is the cherry on top. Fold the brim back Paddington Bear style or wear down for extra sun protection.

Marle hat, $90

Marle’s signtaure ‘Nonna’ hat is made in a lovely heavyweight cotton with fraying detail at the edge of the brim. It comes in a number of colour ways, but for sun protection purposes, this black and white version is a winner.

The natural outer will bounce sun away while the black brim ensures the heat from the sun is absorbed away from your face.

Communitie Marfa hat, $170

Made with 100% palm straw in Marfa, Texas, this classic style has a natural blonde finish and an interior one-size-fits-most elastic hat band. Perfect for the garden, the beach, or walking around the city streets.

Karen Walker xRNZYS hat, $87 (on sale)

Lean in to a nautical summer theme with this collaboration between fashion designer Karen Walker and The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. Cut in navy linen and featuring rope-like contrast cords with an adjustable toggle, this hat is perfect for windy days on or near the ocean.

Kowtow hat, $129

This natural hued option is incredibly easy wearing, made from soft 100% Fairtrade organic cotton 11oz denim.

A sophisticated take on the classic bucket style, complete with contrast stitch detailing.

Companion x Crushes hat, $100

With fetching contrast white stitch along the brim and chin straps for stability, these hats are made from recycled denim fabric in Aotearoa by Companion; a small NZ business that hires refugees and migrants.

Penny Sage hat, $114 (on sale)

This perfectly floppy hat is made in 100% cotton seersucker, while the wide brim is 13cm deep at the front and tapers to 10cm at the back. But it’s really all about that trippy floral print.

Checks Downtown hat, $90

A loose knit crotchet hat is also breathable. Checks say these new nostalgic versions are made by hand by a community workshop of artisans in Nepal.

Hej Hej hat, $100

It’s pink, it’s a bucket hat, it’s got lobsters embroidered on it. Can you think of anything more perfectly fun for the festive season?
