EgyptAir to operate 1st sustainable flight from Paris to Sharm El-Sheikh ahead of COP27 – Climate change – COP27

The Ministry of Civil Aviation said in a statement that the move is part of its strategy for achieving sustainable development and reducing environmental pollution, which includes cutting carbon emissions.

Minister of Civil Aviation Mohamed Abbas said this strategy aims to make the aviation sector eco-friendly, drawing on the government’s plans to increase reliance on new and renewable energy sources.

The Boeing 787-900 Dreamliner will carry a delegation of participants in the UN climate conference.

The national air carrier is one of the world’s first airlines to use sustainable aviation fuel in commercial flights, the ministry said.

Egypt has been working on reducing its carbon emissions through many projects, including introducing eco-friendly mass transportation that runs on electricity, such as light rail transit (LRT), the monorail, and bus rapid transit (BRT).

Egypt plans to boost its green investments to 50 percent of the total public investments by 2024/2025, up from 40 percent currently.

The UN climate conference will aim to cut carbon emissions causing climate change and deal with existing climate impacts.

Egypt has repeatedly called for the necessity to commit to the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius as per the Paris Agreement signed during COP21 in 2015.

COP27 is expected to feature the participation of delegations from around 200 countries, more than 120 heads of state and over 40,000 other participants, the highest number ever for a climate summit on the continent.

Also, more than 3,000 journalists and media professionals from around the world will cover the conference.
